| "Las medusas velero o velas de mar (Velella velella) son colonias de individuos (pólipos) con funciones especializadas, pero que funcionan de manera coordinada como un solo organismo. Presentan un ciclo de vida complejo, donde la fase de hidroide corresponde a la vela de mar que flota en la superficie del mar por medio de una cámara gaseosa con aspecto de vela (pólipo modificado). Las medusas velero se distribuyen ampliamente en los mares del mundo. Por la acción del oleaje y el viento son transportadas hacia las costas, donde los turistas suelen encontrarlas fácilmente por su forma y color azul púrpura. Las medusas velero no son tóxicas y no representan un peligro para el ser humano, la picadura solo causa un ligero enrojecimiento en la piel. Las plataformas virtuales están desempeñando un papel importante en la generación de conocimiento y precisamente con la información analizada de base de datos virtuales, damos a conocer avistamientos de Velella velella en México. Se han reportado varios avistamientos de medusas velero, principalmente en las playas de Baja California y Tamaulipas. También existen registros ocasionales en Veracruz, Yucatán y Quintana Roo. Los avistamientos de medusas velero que acontecen en las costas de México tienden a ser temporales y ocurren entre marzo a mayo. Se exhorta a la ciudadanía a seguir aportando observaciones y fotografías de estos invertebrados y compartirlas en plataformas virtuales." "The by-the-wind sailor or purple sail (Velella velella) is a colony of individuals (polyps) with specialized functions that work in a synchronized way a single organism. They present a complex life cycle, where the hydroid stage corresponds to a gaseous chamber (modified polyp) with the appearance of a small stiff sail that catches the wind to propels them over the sea’s surface. The by-the-wind sailor is widely distributed in the world’s seas; due to the waves and the wind, they are transported towards the coasts, where tourists usually find them by their shape and purple-blue color. The by-the-wind sailor is not toxic and does not pose a danger to humans; the sting only causes a slight redness on the skin. Virtual platforms play an essential role in the generation of knowledge, specificaly with the information analyzed from virtual databases, we report sightings of Velella velella in Mexico. Several sightings of by-the-wind sailors have been reported, mainly at the beach area of Baja California and Tamaulipas. Also, there are occasional records in Veracruz, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo. The by-the-wind sailor sightings that occur off the coast of Mexico tend to be temporary and occur between March to May. We invite citizens to continue providing observations and photographs of these invertebrates and share them on virtual platforms." | |
